We're back in the spectacular Douglas Range this week!
- 41.2km out-and-back (20.6km each way)
or - 53.3km point-to-point
Out-and-Back:
Park at the trailhead on James Rd Right Branch, out in Aorere Valley. The track winds it's way through gorgeous native bush, steadily climbing up to a huge 1300m! This route has been described as "grueling, long, beautiful, rewarding, at one point scary". The track is highly technical with some exposure, and can be slow going at times. At roughly 17km you'll reach your highest point of the day, and make your way down to the sweet Boulder Lake Hut (8 bunks) nestled amongst the tussock. Go for a wander and you might find the magical 10m waterfall! Rest up and head back out the same way.
Point-to-Point
With 3265m of total ascent, sketchy ridgelines and extreme exposure, you'll want your wits about you for this one!
Kick off in Takaka at the trailhead of Anatoki Track, and follow the markers for 18km to the Anatoki Forks Hut. Rest up before beginning the steep 4km climb up to Yuletide Peak (1562m). For the next 15km you're relying solely on your own nav skills while scrambling along and below a rocky, exposed ridgeline. Gnarly stuff! But views, views, views!
Once you've linked up Yuletide, The Needle, Needles Eye and Green Saddle, the end is near! Peep Boulder Lake Hut from your high vantage point - sweet sweet rest awaits! Head out via Boulder Lake Track (ending at James Road Right Brand).
The risk/reward consequences of this adventure are huge, so pick your team, wait for a great weather window, and make sure your gear is on lock 👊
