Explore Castle Hill, Canterbury
Share
Better known for its alpine activities, this region still kicks off over summer - and for good reason!
Tramping, bouldering, mountain biking, camping - you name it, Castle Hill has got it going on! Even after the devastating bushfire a few weeks back, there is still a bunch of amazing adventuring accessible in the area. So get down there and keep supporting the local businesses!
Tramping:
Day hikes galore and totally doable for the little tackers! Explore the other-worldly Castle Hill and the nearby Cave Stream, or wander around the short loops from the Village.
Bouldering:
The Castle Hill Basin is home to thousands of limestone boulders, with an endless array of problems within a ten minute walk from the car park! Popular areas include Spittle Hill, Quantum Field and Flock Hill, but the you could spend months exploring every hidden gem. Need some gear? Hire mats and shoes from Smylies Backpackers in Springfield.
Mountain Biking:
Techy, rooty, loamy, cornflakey native bush - it doesn’t get better folks! Unreal riding to be had around Mount Cheeseman, Craigieburn Forest Park and Broken River. There may even be a few.. ahem… “unofficial” trails that live up to the hype (something about licking a hotdog?). Organise some shuttles with Porters Lodge and shred the day away!
Don’t forget to check which trails are open on the Craigieburn Trails website.
Camping:
There are a bunch of campsites around, from basic DOC sites like Mistletoe Flats, to bougee setups like Porters Lodge - burgers and beer on tap! If you’re looking for more accommodation there is plenty to be found in Castle Hill Village and the various ski lodges in the area.
