One for the kiddos! A basic muster’s hut built in the 1900s, Double Hut is located a gentle 10km walk from Lake Heron in the Canterbury region. Expect stunning views of the lake and out to the Arrowsmith Range.
The hut is a quaint, basic 6-bunker with no bookings of fees required. Many trampers have left their mark on the walls, but can you find Ed Hillary’s signature scrawled on the old timber??
The route skirts the lake on a 4WD track before opening into a flat tussock valley surrounded by mountains. Expect a gentle gradient and a well-marked, easy going track. Keep an eye out for sunbathing skinks!
In this vast landscape, don’t bank on any shelter from the elements - come prepared to slip, slop, slap in the warmer months! After the junction with the Te Araroa trail, Double Hut is just a 30 minute stroll away over the shallow but fast-flowing Swin River. There are fabulous wee pools for a dip if you can brave the cold!
Return via the same track or continue further to summit Mount Taylor (2332m) or to Camyns Hut 17km away.
A great choice for your wee tacker’s first overnight tramp!
