Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)
A local favourite, Fenella Hut is a charming hut tucked deep within the wild and remote Cobb Valley. Despite its remote location, the track into Fenella Hut is gentle, well-maintained and suitable for even the littlest trampers!
Distance: 13km one-way
Elevation: 470m gain
The journey begins at the Cobb Reservoir at the end of the narrow, winding and bumpy Cobb Dam Road. 4WD is preferred but a sturdy 2WD can make it!
Park at the trailhead at the far end of the dam near Trilobite Hut.
Along the way you’ll pass a few other historic huts including Cobb Hut and Tent Camp. The valley is rich in birdlife - you might hear the haunting call of the karearea (NZ falcon) or catch a glimpse of a cheeky kea!
The terrain gradually opens up as you ascend into the alpine. At the bushline the landscape shifts dramatically: native beech turning into golden tussock and craggy rock formations.
Fenella Hut is perched in a stunning basin, surrounded by rocky outcrops and clear tarns. The hut itself is warm and inviting, with a skylight and large windows to soak in the views. Just a short walk behind the hut is a beautiful tarn, perfect for a bracing dip!
There are also plenty of options for exploring beyond the hut - walking to Lake Cobb or climbing up to Waingaro Peak.
