Upper Gridiron Rock Shelter, Kahurangi National Park
This cute wee hut is located in the Kahurangi National Park and has 3 bunks.
Here you'll find your own outdoor fire pit and cosy swing seat, and a tiny shelter that's cleverly nestled under a rock shelf! There are also cooking pots hanging up to use on the fire 🔥🥰
Rated as an easy hike, this is a great overnight hike option, especially one to do with kiddos! The trail is relatively flat and non-technical so you can spend more time looking at your gorgeous surroundings rather than at your feet!
Getting there:
Park up at Flora Carpark in the Kahurangi National Park. Head along Flora Hut walkway past Flora Hut, then take a right at the fork and keep walking - 7km total from the carpark to the shelter.
The road to Flora car park can be hard with a 2WD in rain, snow and mud so drive safe!
As a back up option, there is also Lower Gridiron rock shelter (which has a sleeping platform built into the rock) just 1km further along the track. Check out the sweet swimming spot while you're there! 👙
