Hike to Angelus Hut, Nelson Lakes National Park

Hike to Angelus Hut, Nelson Lakes National Park

Perched on the shores of Rotomaninitua / Lake Angelus and surrounded by spectacular mountain views, Angelus Hut one hell of an experience any time of year.

Heavily-trafficked in summer by locals, visitors and Te Araroa trampers alike, it’s the perfect choice to soak in unreal scenery and cool off in one of the many alpine tarns. You can always pitch your tent away from the crowds in your own quiet oasis!

More of a lone-wolf? Winter is your time to shine. Strap on your crampons, grab your ice axe and get moving! Nothing compares to the dreamy, ethereal solitude of a winter sunrise at 1700 metres. Hot tip: stock up on water before the tank tap freezes 🤪

Most Popular Route: Pinchgut Track & Robert Ridge

This is by far the most-trafficked route to access Angelus Hut, heading straight up the steep Pinchgut Track and traversing Robert Ridge. Super exposed in poor conditions, you’ll want a good weather window to attempt this one! But on a clear day expect big bang for your buck with stunning views the entire way. DOC advises this route could take anywhere from 4-8 hours, depending on the conditions, fitness and level of experience.

Bad Weather Route: Speargrass Track

Conditions not in your favour? You’ll want to stay down in the valley for as long as possible! Speargrass Track is a mixture of rooty and muddy track, followed by a steady climb with many unbridged stream crossings. After popping up onto Robert Ridge, there is a short exposed section before dipping down into the Angelus Basin. Stunning!

Off-The-Beaten-Track Route: Travers-Cascade Track

From St Arnaud, this route will take you via Coldwater (12km) or Lakehead Hut (9km) on the shores of Lake Rotoiti a further 2 hours up the trail to the Cascade Track junction. What follows is a steady 4 hour climb following the Hukere Stream, then a steep ascent along a poled route above the bushline to Angelus Hut. Note: from May to November the bridge of the Hukere Stream is removed due to avalanche risk.

The Long Route: Mt Cedric Track & Traver’s Sabine Circuit

See our previous post on the Travers-Sabine Circuit. If you’ve got the extra days, this longer route is unreal and well worth the trip!

Note: Angelus Hut is a 28-bunk serviced hut, and bookings are required year round.
