Climb in Golden Bay, South Island

Climb in Golden Bay, South Island

Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)

Pōhara & Paines Ford, Golden Bay

There are two main crag options in Golden Bay: the limestone walls of Paines Ford and the sunny Pohara Sea Cliffs. With over 300 climbs in the area, you’ll never get bored! Especially with those views 😮‍💨

If you’ve got no gear but somewhat of an idea, our best advice is to make some climbing mates (Facebook groups are great for making connections!). Did you know, all basic equipment (excluding ropes) can be hired from the Hangdog Office? How good!

Otherwise if you’re sorted on the gear and your skills are up to scratch, make sure you grab a copy of Golden Bay Sport Climbs before you go - we’ve always got them in stock!

Most of the climbs are single pitch sport routes with fixed protection and lower-offs. Make sure you’re set with some quickdraws, carabiners, belay devices and the basics, and of course a 50m or 60m rope!

Camping options:
🧗🏼‍♀️Hang with the rock jocks at Hangdog Campsite ($20/adult/night)
🏖️ Or chill beach-side at the Pohara Top 10 ($62/night powered site)
