Hike Blind Saddle, Kaikoura Ranges

Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)

What an epic landscape!

The track begins climbing through farmland up to 1190m where you will find panoramic views. As you descend down the saddle, there are multiple historic huts, winding streams and twisted rock formations.

All kinds of adventures: there is full access to trampers, mountain bikers and horses in this area and with permission you can also 4WD.

This Clarence area was taken over by DOC in 1993 and has been maintained as conservation land ever since. It has some of the highest mountains in New Zealand outside of the southern alps! I highly recommend having a read of the @tinytramper blog post to see all the options along the way.

Getting there 🚗
From Kaikoura, follow SH1 south for 5km to the Waiau/Mt Lyford turnoff and head inland to the car park at Kahutara River bridge, 25km from Kaikoura. There is a locked gate here restricting horse and vehicle access.

Thank to @k_fult for the awesome photos!
