Dun Mountain Hike 25km from Maitai Dam loop Nelson

Hike up Dun Mountain, Nelson

Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)

Dun Mountain, Bryant Range, Nelson

We have the perfect 25km day loop close to home if you fancy a good climb up, epic views of the Richmond Ranges and a scenic meander back down to where you started.

Dun Mountain, on the Bryant Range offers a full day hike (6 - 8 hours) with 1,250m elevation, combining the Rush Pool Track and gorgeous Coppermine trail, so you can walk the circuit in either direction - but we think this way is prettiest!

Drive to the end of the Maitai Valley Road, just outside of Nelson and start your tramp at the Maitai Dam (the gate closes at 5pm so park outside if you want more time). Head through the Maitai Water Reserve through the pretty forest on a steep up via the Rush Pools track. With a mix of pine forest and mineral belt scrub, the climb is so worth it when you reach the top of the Byrant Range.

From the summit of Dun Mountain, you are rewarded with epic views over the Richmond Forest Park, Byrant Range and Tasman bay, with vibrant contrasts in colours from the Coppermine and Dun Mountain Mineral Belt rocks, making it a pretty unique view.

Continue along the ridge past Dun Mountain shelter and drop down to the Dun Saddle before joining the Coppermine Trail where you have an easier descent with stunning views as you walk, zig zagging down into the Maitai valley. Note, this section of the hike is shared with mountain bikers.

You don’t have to travel far from Nelson to feel like you are worlds away!
Happy hiking :)
