Hike or Paddle to Observation Beach, Abel Tasman National Park

Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)

OBSERVATION BAY, ABEL TASMAN NATIONAL PARK

This beautiful wee campsite is located about 8.5km into the Abel Tasman track from Marahau. It’s about a 5hr round trip by foot or about a 3-4hr kayak depending on the conditions.

It has 6 campsites with great sunrise views right from your tent!

Not always as busy as some of the other beaches along the track, so a nice option for a quiet overnight trip. We loved it!

Watch out for Weka’s! One stole a weka bar out of Em’s tent! Be on high alert - they are cunning lol 😜

Hit up @abeltasmanaquataxi and @abeltasmanseashuttle for transport options.

Our fave campsite in the Abel Tasman are... Mutton Cove, Anapai, Observation Beach, Mosquito Bay, Apple Tree Bay, Akersten, Onetahuti beach - so make sure you check them out!

Getting There

Head north on State Highway 60 towards Motueka, then turn off towards Kaiteriteri. Park up at Abel Tasman DOC carpark (2 Harvey Road, Mārahau 7197), and finish your day with an epic pizza from @parkcafemarahau
