Hike to Asbestos Cottage, Kahurangi National Park

Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)

ASBESTOS COTTAGE, KAHURANGI NATIONAL PARK

Don’t let the name give you the ick!

This wee historic hut in Kahurangi National Park was built in 1897 by prospecting miners, and was the home to reclusive couple, Henry and Annie Chaffey. It has 4 bunks and a cosy wood burner, and is full of cool info and artefacts from the mining era.

The quickest way to the cottage is from Cobb Dam Road 2.5km past the powerhouse, at a hairpin bend in the road known as Asbestos Corner. There is a small parking area and a wooden structure holding an intentions book. It’s about 7km/2hr in from here.

If you’re looking to extend your trip, the cottage could be a cool side mission as a part of a Tableland Loop from the reservoir. Check out @tinytramper ‘s blog post on her website!

Another loop option is to head in from Flora Carpark, up and over the Arthur Range via Upper Takaka Track and returning via Gordon’s Pyramid/Mt Arthur.

Thanks @the_great_nadini for the pics!
