Hike to Emily Peaks, Nelson Lakes National Park

Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)

After an epic adventure off the beaten track? Look no further than this rarely-trafficked route up the stunning Matakitaki River.

The Matakitaki Valley is steep and rugged country, where red deer and chamois thrive from valley floor to tussock tops. This adventurous loop is recommended only for super experienced trampers, requiring off-track navigation in technical, exposed terrain.

Access to the valley is through Mt Ella Station, where you’ll find a parking area and orientation panel opposite the cow shed. Follow the orange track markers, closing all gates behind you.

The carpark to Nardoo Hut is between 8 to 10 hours of unmarked tramping, following a prominent ridge. Nardoo biv is a wee 2 bunker nestled in a sheltered basin, and a popular stop for hunters.

The next day, you’ll spend 5 to 7 hours traversing an exposed ridgeline that ventures above 2000m. Opposite Nardoo Hut find rather sketchy access up onto the ridge, with some well-placed tussock to hold onto 😅 Expect UNREAL 360 degree views, especially from the summit of Emily Peaks (2028m, 2038m).

Set up camp on your choice of flat, grassy spots and soak in the solitude! Campsite pictured is to the north west of the peaks and near a small tarn.

Descend the ridge between Nardoo Creek and Junction Creek to link back onto Nardoo Creek Route - your car awaits!
