Hike to Paraumu and Paratitahi Tarns, Nelson Lakes National Park

Hike to Paraumu and Paratitahi Tarns, Nelson Lakes National Park

Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)

A truly magical place ✨ While a challenging overnight or multi-day hike, we think this one is well-worth the effort! Glorious views and
the most spectacular campsite awaits..

(Please note that no route is marked along the St Arnaud Range. Backcountry and navigation skills required.)

Let’s look at the route options:

Out-and-back from St Arnaud
17km one-way, 34km return
1800m elevation gain

Take the St Arnaud Range Track from Kerr Bay Campsite. The trail climbs gradually through native bush, then climbs steeply up to Parachute Rocks (1400m), named for the
parachute-shaped gravel scree located to the north. Continue up to the crest of the ridge, where stunning views of Wairau Valley, Raglan Range, Mt Richmond Forest Park and
Kahurangi emerge. You’ll have the pleasure of these views for the entire traverse of the
ridge, while dipping down into grassy basins and exploring the various alpine tarns. While
only approximately 12km, the trail here is not marked and can be slow going in places - stick to the high ground where possible to conserve your energy! Follow the ridgeline SSW, skirting Rainbow Skifield. After the last rise, the grandeur of Paratitahu and Paraumu Tarns are revealed! Immense, turquoise tarns cradled in a lush basin surrounded by towering schist cliffs. Well-worth the effort to make it to this magical place!

35km loop
2000m elevation gain

Take the same route from Lake Rotoiti, camp the night (or two!) in the basin, then make your way back towards the skifield. To the west you’ll find a scree run that can be taken down to Lakehead Track and the shores of Lake Rotoiti. Take it easy and always assess the terrain before you commit! Hard part done and dusted, walk the cruisey 9.5km back to St Arnaud.
