Hike to Whiskey Falls, Nelson Lakes National Park

Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)

WHISKEY FALLS, NELSON LAKES NATIONAL PARK

These beautiful waterfalls are a perfect option for a day stroll at Nelson Lakes, taking approximately 3 hours return. This track follows along the lake side and will have you immersed right into New Zealand’s magical native forest 🌴 The track leads to the river, but you can rock scramble right up to the base of the falls!

Urban legend says it was named after an illegal whiskey distillery setup at the falls 🍻 By the time the local sheriff got word, the bootleggers had packed up and disappeared!

Getting there 🚗

An hour from Nelson. From St Arnaud, follow SH 63 west for 2km, then turn into Mountain Robert Road. Follow this for 2.8km to the start of lakeside track.
