Hike up to Beeby's Knob in the Nelson Lakes National Park, New Zealand

Hike up Beeby's Knob, Richmond Forest Park

Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)

Beeby's Knob, Richmond Forest Park, Nelson

Only an hour from Nelson, Beeby’s Knob (1442m) is a great local tramp near St Arnaud in the Richmond Forest Park. With a steady and easy walking trail and epic views on a clear day, this is a family friendly trail that can be done in half a day.

There are two tracks up to Beeby’s Knob - a walking trail which starts off from the Korere - Tophouse Road. There is a tight turn off with a DOC sign pointing to the walking track - and from here you can drive up a very steep bumpy track to the small car park.

Or you can carry on and turn off Tophouse Road and follow it along when it turns into a gravel road and keep driving until you reach the DOC sign and park on the road. This is a shared walking and mountain biking track up to the top.

The 4WD path bends in and out of the forest to a number of open sections to give you a teaser of the view before turning to open tussock with 360 views. The two routes meet at the top of the range, with Beeby’s Hut another 1.8km further on. Beeby’s Hut is a super cute 4 bed bunk with a fire too. From here you can keep walking along the tops as far as you like until you return and head back the way you came.

- 7km to Beeby’s Knob, 8.5km to Beeby’s Hut each way (2-3hrs)

This is a great spot for sunset with an easy return journey underfoot in the dark.
