Hike up Klondyke Valley, Victoria Forest Park

Victoria Forest Park is one of those local gems with a plethora of stunning alpine tarns, dreamy tussock-filled basins and spectacular ridgelines. Perfect for avoiding the summer hoards and experiencing some backcountry magic without a major slog to get there!

And better yet: grab a permit from your local DOC office and bring your favourite four-legged friend along! đŸ¶

12km round-trip
909m elevation gain

Klondkye Spur Track climbs steeply through the bush for about 2km before reaching the
bushline. Head off track along the ridge up to a high point of 1541m, then continue down the ridge to the saddle above a large tussock-filled basin with gorgeous alpine tarns. Drop steeply into the basin from the saddle, find a solid piece of ground to pitch your tent and soak in the incredible views - that you’ll likely have all to yourself!

Total time was around 4.5hrs with 800m of elevation gain. The terrain wasn’t super technical on the ridgeline, however there is no track, only a well-worn path to follow.

Link this track with Klondyke Valley Track to create a loop, by heading down the steep
grassy face to the lower tarns at the head of the valley.

The Klondyke Valley Track meanders gradually down to the valley floor through mossy forest for 4.5kms (2-2.5hrs taking into account the mud!) back to the trailhead. The ground is very boggy but there are a few places to camp in the bush, including one across the main tarn and to the left below the cliffs and the waterfall. You’ll find a beautiful stream here for fresh water.

Kelly & fam walked this loop anticlockwise and over two nights to break up the elevation, camping below the waterfall on night one, then above near the tarn in the basin on night two.

Getting there:
Just outside of Springs Junction, park up at the trailhead off of State Highway 7 on Rahu
Saddle.
