Hike up Lewis Pass Tops, Lewis Pass

Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)

Lewis Pass Tops

An awesome overnighter to feature this week down at Lewis Pass… can you spot Brass Monkey Bivvy nestled in the basin? 🤩

Starting out from St James Walkway car park, climb up through forest to the Lewis Pass - a wonderland of tarns, tussock, undulating tops, and epic views of Victoria Range and Nelson Lakes.

Traverse the narrow rocky ridge line before descending to the stunning basin where Brass Monkey Bivy sits at 1,300m (note: the @docgovtnz hut is closed but the setting is epic for camping!)

On the second day, hike up and out along the ridge line before dropping down to join Rough Creek Track through the forest and out onto Route 7 highway and catch a lift back to the carpark.

Day 1 - 1,200m elevation, 11km, 6-8 hours
Day 2 - 10km, 4-6 hours

Jo and her friend Megan were lucky enough to spend the night up here watching the aurora from their tent, with their hot water bottles and cameras at the ready… it’s one special spot 🥰

If you’re keen to give your body some TLC, stop off at Maruia Hot Springs on the way home and soak those muscles - what a treat!
