Hike up to the summit of Mt Stevens in the Kahurangi National Park

Hike up Mount Stevens, Kahurangi National Park

Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)

Mt Stevens, Kahurangi National Park

Mt Stevens (1213m) is the highest peak on the Wakamarama Range in Golden Bay.

The summit gives you epic views over Golden Bay, Farewell Spit and Kahurangi National Park. The track starts in Aorere Valley near Collingwood.

Park up past Fifteen Mile Creek bridge in the small DOC car park before hitting the trail. It’s a sealed road which turns to gravel for the last 20km.

The trail starts as a 4WD track then merges into a well-marked track with a reasonable climb that is steep in places. After 2-3hrs you will reach the tree line and pop out onto the ridge. From here, you’ll see a peak with a trig point and Mt Stevens as the most southerly summit top (unmarked!)

It’s worth allowing time up at the tops to explore and take in the awesome 360 degree views of the West Coast and Golden Bay, before heading back down.

Trail running: 4 hrs return
Tramping: 6-7 hrs return

Enjoy 🤩
