Hike up Mt Fishtail, Mount Richmond Forest Park New Zealand

Mt Fishtail (1641m) is an epic day hike or overnighter, perfect for catching a spectacular sunrise with 360 degrees panoramic views! Set in the Richmond Ranges, it is named for the twin summits looking like a fishtail (from some angles!). The Mt Fishtail track takes you through the native forest in Pine Valley before a steep climb to Fishtail Hut - an awesome little spot just below the summit.

The first 3km of the track to Mill Flat campsite is gentle until you cross the stream, then it becomes a steep climb up (500m elevation in 1.6 kms) through rocks and roots before you reach the ridge.

From here, head through alpine scrub before reaching the small and sweet Fishtail Hut (4 bunks, no booking required). There is no official route to the summit but the easiest option is to head up the scree slope behind the hut.

Once you are at the saddle climb along the ridge to the summit, where you are rewarded on a clear day with views of the Richmond Ranges, Wairau Valley and Kaikoura Ranges. When you have soaked it all in, head back the way you came!
