Hike up to Mt Starveall in the Richmond Ranges

Hike up Mt Starveall, Richmond Forest Park

Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)

Mt Starveall, Richmond Forest Park

This week is a place you can take your doggo! Pick up a permit from your local DOC office.

Starveall Hut is located in the Richmond Forest Park, tucked away in the bush line (1200m). Its faded red door is a welcome sight - after tackling a few chilly stream crossings and a satisfyingly solid climb of around 900m from Hacket Hut. Autumnal colours peppered the valley and clear, calm blue skies made for a fantastic journey. The short scramble up to Mt Starveall is a must with its 360° views out west to the inland Kaikōura Ranges.

Park up at the Hackett car park, Aniseed Valley Road, Hope 7081

From here, it is a 6-7hr hike from the car park to Starveall Hut, and then another 1 hr to the top of Mount Starveall 🏔️
