Cascade Track to Lake Angelus in nelson lakes national park

Hike Up the Cascade Track, Nelson Lakes National Park

Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)

CASCADE TRACK, NELSON LAKES NATIONAL PARK

Daylight savings are here! Let’s get out and adventure 🙌😜

If you fancy a new challenge, check out this awesome spot in the Nelson Lakes National Park, as an alternative route in and out of the iconic Lake Angelus.

This trail (Cascade Track or Hukere Stream) heads up to Lake Angelus from Lakehead Hut or Coldwater Hut. The trail isn’t for the faint of heart as it’s classed as an expert trail and becomes restricted in winter time from the snow and ice. Along the way you will witness breath taking waterfalls, crystal clear water and epic views.

Once you reach Coldwater Hut or Lakehead Hut from St Arnaud (Kerr Bay), it is 2 hours to the Cascade Track junction. You will have to cross the Travers River so be prepared for this river crossing and check the river levels. Pop into the Nelson Lakes Visitors Centre to check too! If the Travers River is in flood and not passable, head up stream for 1.5hrs to the swingbridge.

From the Cascade Track junction, it is a 4hour steady up following the Hukere Stream. When you reach the bush line, the track ends but you can follow the steep route to Angelus Hut marked by poles.

From May to November, Hukere Stream bridge is removed due to avalanche risk and take care crossing after heavy rain.

Getting here:
Located in the Nelson Lakes National Park, Saint Arnaud. The tracks to Coldwater and Lakehead Head begin at each end of Kerr Bay.

The road is easily accessible, with good parking and toilets.

Happy adventuring!
