Hike up the Mole Tops, Nelson Lakes National Park

Hike up the Mole Tops, Nelson Lakes National Park

A cruisey overnighter, adventurous day trip or an epic trail run! We are obsessed with the Mole Tops for a reason..

The Details:

25km round-trip (to first set of tarns)
1300m elevation gain
Campsite: your choice of gorgeous tarn after gorgeous tarn, or Mole Hut (4-bunk)

We’d highly recommend accessing the Mole Tops via a loop from Mataki Lodge just outside of Murchison. The road to drive in is super accessible and parking at the trailhead is easy peasy. We’ve also heard that Jameson Ridge Track is far superior to Mole Track, but choose your own adventure!

The track up Jameson Ridge is clearly marked, well-defined and a gradual incline. As you climb closer to the saddle, the trees start to thin and you have your first glimpse of the tops - and the ascent to come! Emerging from the bushline, you’ll spy Mole Hut: a wee 4-bunker perched just below the saddle. The poled route meanders through glorious rolling tussock and hooks right at the junction with Mole Track and Mole Saddle-Tiraumea Track. From here the route is not marked but the path is clear - up! The ridgeline is steep and scrambly in sections with some exposure, but overall quite short and highly rewarding.

After cresting the ridge you’ll be rewarded with INCREDIBLE views of Lake Rotoroa, the Ella Range and the Mahanga Range in the distance. There are a plethora of tarns to choose from, each more beautiful than the last. From camp you can wander along the tops, exploring more tarns and Mount Watson. Or if you have the time, maybe even summiting Mount Ella!

If you’re looking to escape the crowds this summer, test out your tent setup or just hang out with mates in a sick spot - this one’s for you!
