Hike up to Avalanche Peak, Arthur's Pass National Park

Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)

Avalanche Peak, Arthur's Pass National Park

Summer edition!

This epic hike is located in the Arthur’s Pass Village and is a relentless climb to the 1833m summit! You will find yourself climbing through beech forest and stumbling open waterfalls. On a fine day you will be rewarded with some of the best views you will ever encounter of the peaks surrounding including the jagged skyline of the Southern Alps!

When returning you can choose to follow the Avalanche Peak Track or follow the Scotts Route ten minutes down from the saddle, making it a loop back to Arthur’s Pass. The descent starts with a scramble and then transitions into defined track where you experience great views of Devils Punchbowl Waterfall.

Getting there: From Arthur’s Pass Visitor Centre follow the orange markers on Avalanche Peak Track.

Please note: This track is said to be difficult and it is advised that you should only attempt this if you have previous backcountry skills and experiences in remote areas. Do not attempt this track in poor visibility due to steep drop offs.
