Mid Wairoa Hut, Wairoa Valley, Nelson
This hut is such a perfect wee getaway via this route! Perfect for a summer
mission with a plethora of swimming holes (or brave a cold plunge in the cooler months!)
The hut has just been renovated (thanks @docgovtnz) and has the best mattresses 😴
The hike in is a 3-4 hour meander following the beautiful Wairoa River. Far easier than the usual 3-day slog along the Richmond Ranges into this hut!
Track starts at the entrance to the Wairoa Gorge MTB park on Wairoa Gorge Road - you can park at the gate and walk in, or drive through (note that you may be locked in depending what time you want to leave). Check their website or email thegorge@nelsonmtb.club to make sure you can get out when you are planning.
Respect that it’s a DOC track starting on private property.
And make sure to follow the orange DOC markers not the mountain bike trails!
