Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)
Nardoo Hut, Nelson Lakes National Park
Bit of a dream spot that Em & her mate Jesse headed up to last weekend. Nardoo Hut (1400m) is located in the Nelson Lakes National Park up the Matakitaki Valley, just before Murchison. The wee hut is nestled within a basin and sleeps just two! A very tidy, well maintained hut that even had ear plugs😂
To get there you will need to use your navigation skills and a Topo map. We headed up the lower Matataki route and then followed the Nardoo Creek right up; with loads of river crossings and steep climb up to the hut (around 7hrs in total).
The next day, we climbed up to the ridge and traversed back to the bushline and an old hunters’ “marked” track down (finding the markers was a fun adventure 🙃). A bit of bush bashing back down to the creek was needed, and then out the same way we came in.
We left at 10:30am and got out about 7:30pm.
More info on Nardoo Hut is found on the DOC site here.
Enjoy!
