Nelson Lakes National Park three day hike loop

Nelson Lakes 3 day Circuit

Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)

NELSON LAKES NATIONAL PARK LOOP

This epic 3-day loop in Nelson Lakes is challenging, rewarding and has a plethora of swim spots!

The track kicks off at Lake Rotoiti and meanders along the lake, valley and up Hopeless Track for a crusiey 25-ish kilometres. Hopeless Hut is tucked away in the bushline and is cosy as!

Day 2 is an off-track adventure following cairns up a rocky basin and steep, exposed slope onto Sunset Saddle (scrambling required). Lunch and optional Mount Angelus ascent here! The track winds down the valley to beautiful Lake Angelus. If you’re not keen on a busy hut, find a nearby tarn to set up camp!

Homestretch! Final leg along Robert Ridge Track (or Speargrass).

DOC sign says 6 hours but times can vary.

Track is absolutely stunning but is very exposed to the elements so be prepared! The road back to the car is around 1.5km, but it’s pretty common to hitch a ride 😉
